Official Press Release, Candid Intent
British-Rwandan Broadcaster Shares Story of Resilience and Purpose in New Memoir, Candid Intent.
For Immediate Release
LONDON, 10th November 2023—Distinguished broadcaster and former BBC World Service Editor, Venuste Nshimiyimana, in collaboration with Haikonic Books, is set to release his highly anticipated memoir, Candid Intent, on 22nd December 2023.
In the book, Nshimiyimana challenges readers to reflect on their life’s purpose and embrace the courage to pursue their dreams, especially in the face of adversity.
Through his own experiences in mainstream media, Nshimiyimana—who witnessed his country descent into chaos during the Genocide of the Tutsis in 1994—offers a message of hope, resilience, and motivation, demonstrating that with determination and a focused mindset, anything is possible.
Unlike a traditional autobiography, Candid Intent focuses on one major episode of the broadcaster’s life. It is an intimate account of his odyssey, as an African expatriate, who journeys from the cutthroat office politics of Newsroom London to the chaos of war-torn Baghdad. A lot stood in his way—office pettiness, the risk of death, and his own barely buried trauma. But did the broadcaster take the easy route of making excuses?
More than a tale of one man’s triumph over his inner ghosts, the book serves as an insider’s masterclass on journalism and provides a unique perspective into the complexities of the human condition.
Through the lens of tragedy, resilience, kindness, and tolerance, Nshimiyimana dissects the intricate tapestry of our shared humanity, unearthing the flaws at our core while celebrating the indomitable human spirit that can lead to ultimate triumph.
Lamine Konkobo, fellow ex-BBC broadcaster and publisher at Haikonic Books, describes Candid Intent as more than a motivational piece. Konkobo says:
“Venuste’s memoir is a testament to the power of clear intent and the stubborn pursuit of one’s own journey with an undivided mind. On top of being a template for how to transform adversity into fuel, this is a significant contribution to the literature on journalism and conflict reporting.”
Candid Intent, from 22nd December 2023, will be available worldwide in multiple formats, including eBook, paperback, and hardcover. The book can be purchased directly through Amazon and Apple Books. Bookshops and academic institutions can place wholesale orders via Ingramspark.

About Venuste Nshimiyimana
Venuste Nshimiyimana is a Rwandan-born British journalist with over 30 years of experience in international broadcasting. The current staffer of the Washington-based VOA had previously served as TV Editor at the BBC where he spent 20 years in various management and editorial positions.
One of his greatest assets as broadcaster is his gift for languages: in addition to French and English, Venuste speaks Swahili and Kinyarwanda, and was often deployed by his former BBC bosses as “four reporters rolled into one.” That was the case in 2003, when he was assigned to the Middle East as part of the BBC’s coverage of the US-led invasion of Iraq.
Beyond broadcasting, Venuste is a mentor and a philanthropist. He is the co-founder of the Acape Trust, which supports underprivileged children in Rwanda. He is Civil Humanitarian Diplomat for Jethro International, and a member of The Soul of Europe.
Venuste is dedicated to promoting peace and education for all. He believes that—with the right inspiration—everyone of us can make a positive difference in the world.
